Dave Weckl Band Live in St. Louis (2019)
“In the summer of 2019, I reconvened the Dave Weckl Band for a show at the Chesterfield Wine and Jazz Fest in St. Louis. I was invited by my good friends, Rob and Mike Silverman. They’re great musicians in their own right and brought in a number of great musicians for this event – including Eric Marienthal, Ptah Williams, and many more. They really support the music community in St. Louis and also own a label called Autumn Hills Records (check it out!)
This show was long overdue. I have always been proud of the music and also the chemistry between the guys in the band. The lineup in this concert saw original members Buzz Feiten (guitar), Tom Kennedy (bass), and Jay Oliver (keys), plus saxophonist Gary Meek, who appears on a few DWB albums and who toured with us more than a few times.
Of course, there is never enough time to plan and coordinate a “one-off” show like this. We did communicate a lot leading up to the show, and we rehearsed for a day at the Silvermans’ amazing studio. But relearning all of these tunes and getting every nuance to come out was a task. I think we did the songs justice and hope you enjoy it.
Live sound was run by my longtime friend and collaborator, Dennis Moody. Stage mixes were coordinated by me and Jay through a pair of QSC Touchmix consoles, direct to hard drives. This is how we captured live sound for the recording.
I edited, mixed and mastered the recording back at my old home studio in LA. It is worth noting that the audio mix, which I am really proud of, was the first project I released after having my speakers and studio “tuned” by Andre Champagne. Essentially, I had frequency responses measured in the area where I listen and mix. Based on the results of these measurements, Andre EQ’d the areas where I sit so that what I hear is now “flat,” giving me a more realistic reference for mixing music. I think it helped!
In 2019, Dave regrouped the iconic Dave Weckl Band for one show in his hometown of St. Louis. Watch the show now in full HD on any of your devices!
