Hey folks...remember me? It’s been four years since I left the Dave Weckl Band and I have to say, I miss playing with the "WeckMonster." I’ve played with lots of drummers, but it’s never so smooth for me until I sit down with Dave.

-

Dave asked that I contribute to his newsletter – so you will see me pop in here from time to time – with articles relating to writing, production and performance of great music.

-

But first...where’s Jay?

-

I have been a busy man, working on several projects since I left the DWB in 1999 (has it been that long?) Here's what's up...

1)  A unique world music project called AO. Musically speaking, this is an amalgamation of music from all over the world, combining the essences of the ‘native’ music of that particular land, then layering all this with the voices of children speaking in various ethnic languages. It’s extremely powerful music, and we are working with some people to integrate it into film – and possibly a live show at some point. You learn more about AO at www.aomusic.com .

This project has taken us to powerful spots all over the world, and we’ve been studying the indigenous music from those territories.  We’ve just returned from India – where we are working with one of the top composer/producers there, Sandeep Chowta. We’ve also been to Beijing, China – and have officially been asked to do music for the upcoming Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008. Pretty powerful stuff...

2)  The Jay Oliver solo project.  After many years – I am finally ready to do a solo record.  I’ve realized that there is a new kind of music coming out of me…a new sound...and new style.. a new concept…something completely “outside of the box”.  In order to find this, I purposely put myself “in a secret laboratory” and stopped listening to other music.  I began to refocus on the acoustic piano (my original instrument), and approached it more like a drummer (literally learning to play paradiddles and various L/R techniques on the keyboard).  In addition, I began to infuse some unorthodox elements into this new music (i.e., other influences such as Irish music, middle eastern and Asian music, and also American folk/gospel).  The result is really different and interesting. Stay tuned for this and my new web site!

Back to the topic...where's 1?

Many years ago, Dave & I stumbled upon a new kind of ‘feel’ when I heard one of his drum solos displaced (I thought the downbeat was somewhere else).  His solo suddenly took a new life, and it was killer! I was convinced that he needed to hear it the way I was hearing it, so we recorded his solo again and then played it back ‘displaced’ and it blew our minds!  He then used that to get a feel for a NEW way to solo!

How We Did It

JO:    Rhodes

DW: : Drum Solo

We started a click (in headphones only) and I played a common Latin rhythmic motif – right hand only – no bass line.  Dave then played a solo over that – and we recorded the whole thing, except we didn’t record the click.

Then...we played it back, and this time, I played a bass line LIVE (to the tape) – only I purposely “heard” the track in a different spot.  I made this an ‘obvious’ bass line, so that Dave and I both heard the tape now playing with the ‘1’ in a different place.  The drum solo was WILD!  Listening to it displaced like this opened up a whole new door to possibilities. From there, we began to utilize this newfound “feel” and integrate it into the arrangements and music that we wrote.

When Dave “goes off..."

“Whoa.. there he goes again…what was that? Where’s the "1"? Where’s the downbeat? Was that an odd time signature? What’s the secret to finding where the downbeat is?

Hmm..  well..  I’ll save that answer for the next article…but I will give you a hint:  It helps to know the drummer’s “vocabulary," 'cause at a certain point, I almost know what Dave is gonna do – even before he does it.

More on rhythmic ambiguity in the next article !

Out!

Hi everyone,

Welcome back for another round of my new newsletter! I'm fairly over
the top right now with the making of the new DWB CD, so I have to skip
the Q & A section this month, but will answer some of your questions
next month.

We have finished all the recording, which really went great.... I'm
very excited about this record! Besides the guys in the band, Steve,
Tom and Gary, my friend Ric Fierabracci plays bass on a few tunes that
he was involved with in the composing stage (he will also be subbing
for Tom this spring in EU). Richie Garcia came and played some amazing
percussion sounds, and Paul Pesco laid down some funky guitar
tracks.... I'll be editing and mixing for the next couple weeks, so
sound clips will be coming soon to the site.....we'll let ya know!
Record will be released sometime in June on Stretch/Concord Records.

Wanted too to thank Jay for the contribution in the article.... He's
such an amazing talent, and I'm very happy he is doing a solo project.
We look forward to doing more things together in the future.

Ok, I gotta get back to the studio! Have fun playing!

Due to a very tight production schedule for the new Dave Weckl Band album, Dave will be answering your questions next month.

-
Have a question for Dave? About his music? His career? The musicians he's played with? A practicing tip? This is the place to ask.
-
Each month, Dave will answer your questions right here. He can't answer them all - and can't answer them individually - but using this forum, he'll answer the most interesting ones he gets.
-
To submit a question, send an e-mail to questions@davewecklnews.com .

-Progress on the New DWB Album

-

Dave reports that writing is complete for the new record. The guys will be laying tracks over the next couple of weeks. Look for an appearance by bassist Ric Fierabracci on four tracks. Ric has played with Chick Corea, Andy Summers, Yanni and many other artists. Dave expects a release date sometime this June.

New Merchandise/Instructional Products Planned!!

-
Dave and business partner/music collaborator Jay Oliver are gearing up to launch some exciting new products through their company, The Player's Circle.
-
The company originally started in 1998 when it released the "In Session" series, a play-along product for the Dave Weckl Band release "Rhythm of the Soul." "In Session" has since been available at music retailers around the world, but will now also be available online on the soon-to-be-launched web site, www.theplayerscircle.com.
But that's just the beginning!
-
Dave and Jay are also planning to release new instructional products and merchandise. We don't want to completely let the cat our of the bag, but some of the products being developed include "spy cam" footage of Dave with the Elektric Band (from the original tour!), plus authentic Dave Weckl merchandise like t-shirts, posters, a tour book and much more. Dave even mentioned some video footage of the "Synergy" recording sessions. Exciting stuff.
-
"Fans have have always asked me why we don't sell tour books and t-shirts at our shows," Dave said. "The music has always come first...and we spend a lot of time making music. But we're at a point now where it makes sense, and we'll make it available to fans online so that no matter where they are, they can get it."
-
Stay tuned to future issues of "Behind The Kit." We'll be releasing more news as it becomes available.

The best way to describe the NAMM Show? It's BIG! And this year, it got even bigger. Held from January 20-23, the NAMM Show saw 78,000 registered attendees and more than 1,400 companies exhibiting product.
Dave made personal appearances for Yamaha, Sabian, Remo and Vic Firth. He spent a lot of time talking to fans, signing autographs and checking out all the latest gear from these great companies (in case you didn't know - Dave is addicted to cool gear!)
Couldn't make it to the show? Behind The Kit was there covering the event. You can view pictures from the show by clicking on the picture of Dave and Steve Gadd, below.
We also got some shots at the Dave Weckl Band shows at Catalina's in Hollywood. After clicking on the NAMM Show pictures page, you'll see a link to these shots. By the way, the band sounded great, playing several new songs from their upcoming album - which, by the way, is yet to be named. In fact, Dave doesn't even have names for the songs! He did introduce one song as, simply, "7/8," describing it as "the only odd time signature I can play in!" Take our word for it...you're going to call it "great."
