September 16,
2006, was a memorable night for drummers and drumming
aficionados alike. It was one of two nights that the Dave
Weckl Band played back-to-back with Steve Smith's
Jazz Legacy. This time, the venue was IMAC (the
Inter-Media Art Center) in Huntington, New York.
IMAC is a big, beautiful theater. The town of Huntington is
very supportive of the music that comes there. But jazz fans
from all over the tri-state area came to this show, which
boasted two of the hottest jazz groups out there - and two
of the finest drummers.
This night, Steve Smith's Jazz Legacy went first. The
band plays music that is dedicated to honoring the legacy of
many of the great jazz drummers such as Art Blakey, "Philly"
Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, and Tony Williams. Jazz Legacy
also performs original compositions and arrangements written
by the individual band members which serves to gives the
band a unique direction.
This powerhouse, swinging jazz quintet is made up of five
seasoned musicians; Andy Fusco (alto sax), Walt Weiskopf
(tenor and soprano saxes), Mark Soskin (piano), Baron Browne
(bass) and bandleader Steve Smith (drums).
After a swinging set by Jazz Legacy, and a standing
ovation, the crowd stayed on their feet for the DWB.
It was one of those rare evenings...
